Microsoft says for computers that have more than 1 GB RAM, "The HeapDecommitFreeBlockThreshold registry key provides better control of how the memory is handled as it is freed. If you set this registry key to a high value (for example, 262144), the heap manager is more effective when making sure that no bytes are decommitted. ![]() ![]() Edit the HeapDecommitFreeBlockThreshold registry key (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contr ol\Session Manager HeapDeCommitFreeBlockThreshold). My system was already reporting that I had 3.25 GB RAM, but I'm pretty sure half of it was being allocated to the Windows OS.ħ. If you have a system with 4 GB RAM, set up a new BOOT.INI option with a 3GB switch (reads as: multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="XP Professional 3GB switch" /3GB /USERVA=2900 /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn ). Virtual Memory > Set to none (if you have at least 2 Gb).Ħ. Change power scheme to "always on" (other settings may minimize CPU power usage)ĥ. Start > Settings > Control Panel > System > Advanced > Performance Settings > Advanced Tab > select “Background Services”Ĥ. Performance Options -> Set processor scheduling to Background services With many voices required to play at the same time it can make a big difference with pops and clicks.ġ. Each sample for the instrument initially gets more of it loaded into memory, but this means slightly less time to fully load, which means less lag to play. Options > Memory tab > Instrument preload buffer size increased from the default 60 kb to 78 kb. NI suggests this setting is usually your best bet if not running the plugin in standalone mode.Ħ. If you are using Kontakt within a DAW – DO NOT enable the multicore processing in Kontakt. That way you’re loading only the samples that you really use in the project and not the complete instrument with all the keyswitches and variations.ĥ. To reduce memory usage, after you've recorded your MIDI instrument, use the “purge samples” option in Kontakt. if you're recording you can track effect free, then engage the effects for playback (increasing buffers if necessary).Ĥ. If you select INIT from the mixer presets (no effects applied) you will find a noticible decrease in CPU use. For instruments like Abbey Road Drummer, at the mixer section you may be running up to 4 effects per channel, including busses and mains, because of a selected preset. Reduce the voice count/polyphony at the top of the GUI.ģ. You've got the RM Kit mics to get you reverb.Ģ. In the Mixer Section, if using an instrument like Abbey Road Drummer, mute the reverb. Turn off the convolution engine for reverb. So far I'm aware of all these (which I include below in case others may not know about them):ġ. Now I realize there are many things that can be done to optimize a system for Kontakt player. ![]() I'd like to not hear the pops and clicks during recording because it can be distracting. When I record MIDI parts using my M-Audio 49e Keystation (which is connected to a non-shared USB port), during the actual recording I'm getting some pops and clicks, then afterwards with the record button still engaged during playback to check the take I get the same pops and clicks, but if I disengage the record button I get no pops and clicks at all. The only problem I have is when I have the track armed to record. I've been tweaking my very basic system (Windows XP professional 32 bit with 3 GB switch boot, 4 GB RAM, 2.83 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, dual ATA serial 7200 rpm hard drives, Emu 1616M audio interface and soundcard with ASIO driver) trying to get the free Kontakt 5 player to run Native Instrument's Abbey Road Modern Drummer, which includes two fabulously recorded drum sets.
